5 Easy Day Trips Within an Hour of Camp

By The Campground Team·July 8, 2026·5 min read

One of the best things about camping in Straughn is how much sits within an easy drive. You’re less than a mile off I-70, right between Indianapolis and Dayton, so a lazy morning at the lake and a real afternoon adventure fit into the same day. Here are five favorites — all close enough that you’ll be back for the campfire.

1. Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame — 14 miles

In basketball-crazy Indiana, this New Castle landmark is a must. Interactive exhibits, decades of Hoosier hoops history, and enough to keep fans of all ages busy for a couple of hours. It also makes a great rainy-day backup.

2. Wilbur Wright Birthplace & Museum — 9 miles

The closest trip on the list, and a great one for curious kids. Walk through the restored birthplace of the aviation pioneer, see a full-scale replica flyer, and let the little ones run the grounds.

3. New Castle Motorsports Park — 12 miles

One of the top go-kart tracks in the country. Bring your own or rent — either way, it’s a fast, fun afternoon the whole family will talk about all the way home.

Pair a morning at the lake with an afternoon in town, and you’ve got a full day without ever feeling rushed.

4. Warm Glow Candle Outlet — 14 miles

You can’t miss it from I-70. Part candle shop, part general store, all Indiana. Grab a snack, wander the aisles, and pick up something that makes the camper smell like home.

5. Whitewater Valley Railroad — 19 miles

Down in Connersville, hop aboard a scenic heritage train ride through the countryside. Check the schedule ahead of time and plan your day around the departure — it’s worth it.

Make camp your home base

See the sights by day, and come back to the lake, the beach, and the campfire by night. That’s the whole idea. Want the full rundown of what’s nearby? Here’s our complete Things to Do guide. When you’re ready, reserve your spot and start planning the trips you want to take.
